Tarantulas as Pets

Tarantulas can be interesting, low maintenance pets to have in your home. There are many different species available in the pet trade; the trick is to buy responsibly and from a reputable breeder/trader. The type of tarantula matters, too. There are several that are considered "starter" species that are mellow and very easy to keep.

Good Beginner Species

The Chilean Rose Hair Tarantula (Grammastola rosea) is by far the most common species you'll find at any pet store. They are hardy, long-lived, and are usually priced affordably.

Another good starter tarantula is the Curly Hair Tarantula (Brachypelma abilpilosum) although they are not as readily available as Rosehairs.

And remember, female tarantulas can live for twenty years or more. Be ready to be commited!
